An opera based on The Jerry Springer Show? First of all, do not click off to go to tickmasters just yet….. unless you want to go to London to see the show that is. It is banned on broadway here because Christian fundamentalist groups have campaigned against the show.
Its got tragedy. Its got violence. There are people screaming at each other and you cannot understand what they are saying. There is chair throwing. Its perfect for opera.
The Opera opens with a chorus who singing the word JERRY JERRY JERRY….
You meet a series of guests with guilty secrets,
Dwight, a portly serial adulterer.
Montel, who admits to his fiancee his fetish for wearing diapers.
Shawntel, who wants her backwoodsman husband Chucky to know of her ambition to be a pole dancer.
These characters sing their confessions in the straight faced manner of grand opera.
Half of the company flanks the stage, becoming the shows audience, functioning as a chorus and hurling insults at guests, shouting Hillbilly, Trailer trash, and loser, are among the more polite ones.
